Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama locked in Iowa tie - poll

Democrats Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama are locked in a virtual tie in Iowa, having left rival John Edwards in a cloud of Hawkeye State dust, a new poll shows.

At the same time, Mitt Romney seems to be pulling away from the Republican pack, leaving Rudy Giuliani to vie for second with a suddenly surging Mike Huckabee of Arkansas.

The new University of Iowa poll found Clinton edging Obama among likely voters, 28.9% to 26.6%, with Edwards - who has led the Democrats in Iowa since March - falling to 20% in the early voting state.

Romney is cruising at 36.2% - up more than 8 percentage points since August - while Giuliani's 13.1% is just barely ahead of Huckabee's 12.8%. Fred Thompson of Tennessee is fourth at 11.4%.

"It's clear Romney is the one to beat in Iowa," said David Redlawsk of the university's Hawkeye Poll. "At the same time, Huckabee is developing a following among evangelical Christians, which may allow him to make a strong showing."

Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas and an ordained Baptist minister, was struggling at less than 2% in Iowa as recently as August. But strong showings in debates and among Christian conservatives appear to be propelling him.

I believe that Barack won the poll because he is more popular than Hilary.
